"De l'Imprimerie de Mame frères": verso of half-title leaf, v. 1 According to Bissainthe, a second edition was also printed in 1814 According to the author in his preface, this account of the revolution in Haiti was written, from exile in the United States, in the Winter of 1793-1794 Includes a description of a voodoo ceremony among the black slaves in Bois Caïman (v. 1, p. 117-118) on the 14th of August, 1791 on the Norman plantation, at which the slave leader Boukman, himself a priest or oungan, slit the throat of a large black pig and commanded everyone there to drink. Everyone swore an oath to fight for freedom until death. Although the term "voodoo" is not used by name, Michèle Oriel, in the Histoire et dictionnaire de la révolution et de l'indépendance d'Haiti, p. 185, claims that Dalmas is the first to describe such a ceremony in print.
