They do not see them as they are. The adjoining map, which shows Turkey spread over a part of the United States, will give a better conception of the size of Asiatic Turkey. Turkey as it stands, with its share in Arabia omitted, is 696,894 square miles, a little less than one quarter of the "Continental United States," the United States exclusive of Alaska and insular possessions. The Kingdom of the Hejaz, practically guaranteed by Great Britain, is to-day, forall practical purposes and international relations, part of the British Empire, as indeed is all Arabia, about 1,000,000 square miles, with large certainties of oil wells in a region holding the largest unexplored area on the globe, except the South Polar lands. As Lord Robert Cecil neatly said in the House of Commons when asked if the British Government was responsible for the creation of the Kingdom of Hejaz, "No, but I cannot say we were surprised at the result," while the members shook with laughter over the neatness with which the span between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf had been bridged.
